Direct-to-film (DTF) printing applies a printed transfer to a garment using heat and pressure. It is a useful option for colourful company logos, names and text, especially where a design needs detail that may be difficult to reproduce in stitches.
How DTF printing works
Your artwork is prepared as a print file, printed onto a specialist film and combined with a heat-activated adhesive system. The transfer is then applied to the garment using controlled heat and pressure. Unlike embroidery, the design sits on the fabric as a printed layer rather than being formed from thread.
When to choose DTF
Consider DTF for multicolour logos, larger back designs and individual names or roles. It can reproduce printed detail without converting every shape into stitches. The practical result still depends on the artwork, finished size, transfer system and garment: very small text may need simplifying, and a large solid print can feel different from a small chest logo.
Which garments are suitable?
DTF can be an option for suitable T-shirts, polos, sweatshirts and hi-vis garments. Suitability must be checked for the exact item. Fabric coatings, stretch, texture, heat sensitivity and dye migration can affect the result, so do not assume that every garment in a category can receive the same transfer.
Printing on high-visibility clothing
We check the proposed position and size against the chosen garment. Decoration must not cover reflective tape or compromise the visible material needed for its classification. Specialist PPE, including flame-resistant clothing, needs a suitable approved decoration process; a standard transfer should never be assumed appropriate.
Artwork, placement and approval
Send the original artwork where possible, together with the garment codes, colours, quantities and print positions. Vector files are useful for logos; good-quality raster artwork may also be suitable depending on the design. Tell us the required size and any colour references, then check the proof carefully for spelling, placement and proportions.
Looking after printed workwear
Follow the garment label and the decoration instructions supplied with your order. Washing, drying and ironing requirements depend on the finished item. Avoid applying an iron directly to the printed design. Ask us before ordering if your clothing will be commercially laundered or exposed to demanding cleaning processes.
Common questions
DTF or embroidery: which should I choose?
DTF is worth considering for detailed printed designs and larger areas. Embroidery gives a textured stitched finish. The best choice depends on the fabric, logo, position and how the garment will be used.
Can I order a small quantity?
Contact us with the garment and quantity you need. We will confirm the available service, price and production timing for your particular order.
Can you print names as well as a logo?
Ask about individual names, roles or text when requesting your quote. Provide the final wording and quantities so the artwork and production requirements can be checked.
