Direct to Film printing provides a way to apply full-colour artwork to suitable garments. It is useful when a design needs printed detail, but the fabric and intended use still determine whether it is the right process.
How the process works
The design is printed onto a transfer film and applied to the garment using a heat process. The finished result depends on the artwork, transfer system, fabric and application settings, rather than the name of the process alone.
Where it can be useful
Discuss DTF for multicolour logos, larger designs and individual names or roles. Tiny lettering still needs to be assessed at its actual printed size. A sharp image on a screen is not a guarantee that every detail will remain readable on fabric.
Check garment compatibility
Coatings, stretch, texture and heat sensitivity can affect suitability. For hi-vis and other PPE, the proposed decoration must also respect the garment’s protective requirements and manufacturer’s instructions. Do not cover reflective material or assume any size of back print is acceptable.
Prepare the order
Send the original artwork, garment codes, quantities and placement details. Ask the team to recommend the process and confirm the proof, current price and production timing. Follow the finished item’s care instructions; avoid relying on a universal wash-life promise for all DTF products.
