DTF Printing or Embroidery: Choosing a Workwear Finish

Updated 7 October 2026

Hivis.net · Guides & newsPrint or embroidery?

Print and embroidery offer different finishes. The best choice comes from the garment, artwork, intended use and the result you want to achieve.

Compare the appearance

DTF is worth discussing for multicolour artwork, gradients and larger printed designs. Embroidery creates a textured stitched finish and is often chosen for smaller logos on suitable polos, fleeces and similar garments. Neither method wins every comparison.

Check the artwork at its real size

Fine lines and small lettering may need adjustment for either process. Ask to see the intended dimensions and placement on the proof. Embroidery may require simplification; a print may need a larger size to keep the wording readable.

Consider the fabric and protective features

Weight, stretch, coatings and construction affect the choice. Embroidery introduces needle holes, while heat application can affect unsuitable materials. Waterproof and protective garments need a model-specific check rather than a general rule that print is always safe.

Use both where it makes sense

A suitable garment may work with a small stitched chest logo and a larger printed back design. Confirm that the combined decoration is acceptable, particularly on hi-vis clothing where visible areas matter.

Decide on the whole order

Compare the quotation, care requirements and repeat-order needs. Send the garment codes and original artwork to the team for a recommendation. Avoid universal claims that one method always lasts longer, costs less or suits every fabric.
