The right ear defender is the one that suits the assessed noise exposure, fits the wearer and works with the rest of their equipment. The highest rating is not automatically the best choice.
Understand SNR
SNR means Single Number Rating. It summarises attenuation under test conditions; it is not a guarantee of the exact reduction every wearer will achieve in a workplace. The selection should use the noise assessment and the product’s attenuation information.
Compare the way it will be worn
Consider headband, neckband or helmet-mounted designs as appropriate. Check the approved helmet combination where relevant and whether spectacle arms or other equipment affect the seal.
Try comfort and fit
Allow wearers to compare suitable options. Look at adjustment, cushion condition and the ability to wear protection correctly for the required period. Do not choose solely by price or the appearance of the cups.
Plan care and replacement
Follow the manufacturer’s cleaning and maintenance instructions. Keep replacement cushions or hygiene kits where the model supports them, and replace worn components when required. The hearing-protection buying guide covers the broader selection process.
