The right hi-vis class comes from the workplace requirements and risk assessment. It cannot be selected reliably from a job title, garment colour or a general rule in a shopping guide.
Understand the three classes
EN ISO 20471 classifies high-visibility clothing as Class 1, 2 or 3, with Class 3 having the highest requirements within that classification. The garment’s design and visible material contribute to the result.
Check the exact item and size
Read the product information and label for the size you intend to buy. Some smaller sizes carry a different classification. Do not assume a jacket and trousers achieve a combined class unless that combination is declared by the manufacturer.
Account for the working conditions
Provide the safety lead with information about vehicle movements, lighting, weather and how the garment will be worn. Include any site or sector specification in the buying brief.
Consider branding and other layers
A logo, an open fastening or another layer worn over the garment can affect the intended visible area. Ask about suitable decoration and follow the wearing instructions. Our more detailed EN ISO 20471 guide explains what the classification tells you.
