Unsafe shortcuts are easier to challenge when the team understands the problem and has a workable alternative. The following examples are prompts for a site discussion, not substitutes for a task assessment.
Access and working at height
1. Using stacked furniture or improvised platforms to gain height.
2. Setting access equipment on an unstable surface.
3. Stepping onto a roof without confirming the planned protection for fragile areas and openings.
Handling and movement
4. Moving a load without a suitable handling and securing method.
5. Throwing tools or materials to save a short journey.
6. Allowing pedestrian routes and vehicle movements to become confused.
Equipment and ignition risks
7. Attempting electrical work or repairs without the required competence and safe procedure.
8. Introducing smoking or another ignition source where flammable materials may be present.
Turn the discussion into action
Ask where similar pressures arise in your workplace and why people might take a shortcut. Provide the right access, time, equipment and supervision, then check that the agreed method is usable. Buying PPE alone does not correct an unsafe system of work.
