Work at height needs a suitable method, competent people and equipment selected for the task. Buying a ladder or harness is not a substitute for planning how the job will be completed.
Can the task be done from the ground?
Consider whether tools, access or the work sequence can remove the need to work at height. If not, assess how falls will be prevented and how any remaining risk will be controlled.
Select access equipment deliberately
Consider the work duration, reach, loading, ground conditions and the need to move materials. Follow the equipment instructions and the planned method; do not improvise extra height by stacking objects or overreaching.
Include the surroundings
Think about openings, fragile surfaces, nearby people, falling objects and weather. Make sure changes in conditions can be reported and the work stopped or revised when necessary.
Brief the team
Confirm who is responsible for checks and supervision, and how emergency arrangements will work. Where personal fall protection is part of the method, the complete system and rescue plan need competent specification. Refer to HSE’s work-at-height guidance for the planning hierarchy.
